Rise above the forests of the Annapurna region and walk along a dramatic ridgeline toward one of Nepal’s most spectacular close-up mountain viewpoints. The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a short yet powerful Himalayan journey that takes you from Pokhara into alpine wilderness, offering uninterrupted views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.
Starting with a short drive from Pokhara to Phedi, the trail climbs steadily through rhododendron forests and traditional mountain villages before reaching open ridge terrain. As the forest thins, the landscape transforms into high alpine slopes with expansive Himalayan panoramas. Unlike busier trekking routes in the Annapurna region, the Mardi Himal trail feels quieter and more intimate.
The highlight of the trek is the ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 meters. From here, you stand directly beneath the sacred peak of Machhapuchhre, also known as Fishtail Mountain. The proximity to the mountains is dramatic, offering one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Annapurna region without requiring a long expedition.
This 5-day itinerary is ideal for trekkers who are short on time but still want a genuine high-altitude Himalayan experience. With professional local guides, organized permits, and smooth logistics from Pokhara, Sole Encounters Adventures ensures a safe and well-managed journey from start to finish.
If you are looking for a short, scenic, and moderately challenging trek in Nepal that begins and ends in Pokhara, the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is one of the best options available.
Pokhara – Phedi – Pothana – Low Camp – High Camp – Mardi Himal Base Camp – Low Camp – Lumre – Pokhara
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is considered moderate due to its steady altitude gain and daily walking hours.
Trekkers walk 5 to 6 hours per day on mountain trails that include stone staircases, forest paths, and exposed ridge sections. The highest elevation reached is approximately 4,500 meters near Mardi Himal Base Camp.
With proper pacing and gradual ascent, most physically prepared trekkers complete this route comfortably. Previous hiking experience is helpful but not mandatory.
Our guides maintain a steady and safe pace, monitor your condition daily, and adjust timing when necessary to ensure comfort and safety.
The best seasons for this trek are spring, March to May, and autumn, September to November.
Spring offers blooming rhododendron forests, moderate temperatures, and clear mountain views. Autumn provides stable weather, crisp air, and excellent visibility of the Annapurna range.
Winter trekking is possible with colder temperatures at higher elevations, while the monsoon season may bring rain and reduced visibility.

Let us help you experience Mardi Himal Base Camp safely, professionally, and without unnecessary complications.
After a short drive from Pokhara to Phedi, the trek begins with a steady climb up stone staircases and terraced farmland. The first section is steep and continuous before entering forest trails that wind gradually uphill.
You pass through the Dhampus area ridges and forested sections before reaching Pothana, a peaceful village with early views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South.
Distance: 9 km / 5.6 mi | Duration: 5 hrs | Ascent: +900 m / +2,953 ft | Descent: –40 m / –131 ft
Today’s trail climbs steadily through thick rhododendron and oak forests. During spring, the forest bursts into color with blooming flowers.
The ascent is gradual but consistent. The trail undulates through forest ridges, gaining and losing small elevation before climbing higher. As you gain elevation, glimpses of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre begin to appear between trees.
Eventually, the forest thins and Low Camp opens into a scenic clearing with magnificent mountain views.
Distance: 10 km / 6.2 mi | Duration: 5 hrs | Ascent: +1,050 m / +3,444 ft |Descent: –90 m / –295 ft
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs above the tree line onto an exposed ridgeline. The terrain becomes alpine with open slopes and sweeping views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.
The ridge walk includes small dips before the final steady climb to High Camp. The exposure increases and the views become dramatic and uninterrupted.
Distance: 7 km / 4.3 mi | Duration: 6 hrs | Ascent: +650 m / +2,133 ft | Descent: –50 m / –164 ft
An early start leads you along a narrow ridge toward Mardi Himal High Camp and onward to Base Camp. The climb is steady with several short descents before the final push upward.
At 4,500 meters, Mardi Himal Base Camp offers breathtaking close-up views of Machhapuchhre’s south face. The proximity to the mountain feels powerful and immersive.
After spending time at Base Camp, descend carefully back past High Camp and continue down to Low Camp for the night.
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 mi | Duration: 6–7 hrs | Ascent: +1,050 m / +3,444 ft | Descent: –1,650 m / –5,413 ft
The final trekking day involves a long descent through forest trails and hillside villages. The route includes short uphill sections before dropping steadily toward Lumre.
The temperature rises gradually as you lose altitude and vegetation becomes denser. Upon reaching Lumre, a short drive returns you to Pokhara where the trek concludes.
Distance: 11 km / 6.8 mi | Duration: 6 hrs walk | Ascent: +200 m / +656 ft | Descent: –1,944 m / –6,377 ft

The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is considered moderate. The main challenge comes from steady uphill walking, long forest climbs, and trekking up to 4,500 meters.
Most days involve 5 to 6 hours of walking. The ascent to Base Camp is the most demanding day due to altitude and elevation gain.
No technical climbing skills are required. With good physical preparation and steady pacing, most trekkers complete this route comfortably.
What matters most:
• Ability to walk several hours daily
• Good leg strength for stair sections
• Maintaining a slow, consistent pace at altitude
Although shorter than many Himalayan routes, this trek reaches 4,500 meters, where altitude awareness is important.
We manage altitude by:
• Following gradual elevation gain
• Encouraging proper hydration
• Monitoring trekkers’ condition daily
• Using a pulse oximeter at higher elevations
• Adjusting pace when necessary
If any symptoms of altitude sickness appear, descent is the safest response.
Accommodation during the trek is in traditional mountain teahouses on a twin-sharing basis.
Rooms are simple but clean, with shared bathrooms at most stops. Facilities become more basic at higher elevations such as High Camp.
Despite simplicity, lodges provide warm meals and comfortable resting spaces after each trekking day.
Three meals per day are included during the trek: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Typical options include:
• Dal bhat
• Rice and noodle dishes
• Pasta
• Soups
• Eggs and breakfast sets
• Tea or coffee
Meals are freshly prepared in local teahouses.
Each porter carries up to 30 kg total, shared between two trekkers. This allows approximately 15 kg per person.
You should carry a small daypack with essentials such as water, snacks, warm layers, and personal items.
We recommend packing efficiently and keeping weight within limits.
We operate small groups to maintain safety, flexibility, and better pacing.
Small groups allow:
• Better guide-to-guest ratio
• Personalized attention
• Easier lodge arrangements
• Stronger safety monitoring
Private departures are also available.
Previous hiking experience is helpful but not mandatory.
Trekkers with good physical fitness and preparation can complete this trek successfully. Cardiovascular training and stair climbing before arrival are recommended.

I had an amazing experience with sole adventures trekking. The guides offered smooth experience throughout the journey. It's an unforgettable experience for me. The Mardi Himal Trek was a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience that completely exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for stunning Himalayan views without the crowds of more popular trails, this is the perfect choice. If you want to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas in a quieter setting, Mardi Himal is a hidden treasure. The trek is short (5–7 days), scenic, and spiritually refreshing. I would 100% recommend it to those who love mountains and minimal crowds.Emily

My Mardi Himal trek with Sole Encounters was unforgettable. At 59, I started the journey with excitement and some uncertainty, but our guide Rajendra and porter Rajendra were outstanding—kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. Their support, especially Rajendra's humor and encouragement, made the challenging high-altitude hike a truly rewarding experience.

The Mardi Himal trek was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m already planning my next: the Annapurna Base Camp Trek! The Himalayas keep calling me back. Prem Guide recommended by a colleague, was incredible from start to finish. He responded quickly to all my questions, met me at the Kathmandu airport, and even suggested a great dinner spot. The Kathmandu city tour was amazing, with visits to UNESCO sites, and Prem later organized exciting activities and tours in Pokhara.I’m truly grateful for Prem’s outstanding service and can’t thank him enough for making this trip so memorable.

Amazing experience with smooth booking and great guides. The Mardi Himal trek is incredible on its own, but with Sole Encounters Trekking Pvt Ltd, it’s safe, enjoyable, and tailored to your needs. We found Sole Encounters through Google, and the booking was easy. The owner is very helpful, offering clear planning, packing lists, and a pre-trip meeting. I recommend paying upfront to avoid extra charges. For added comfort, consider room upgrades, especially in the first few nights, as the trek gets tougher with altitude. Sole Encounters ensures you're well taken care of throughout the entire journey.
